The Franz Josef Community Council (FJCC) is an incorporated society that all residents are welcome to join.
The society owns the Community Centre, Playground and the ‘Gibb Track’ (located between the Franz Josef Medical Centre and the Franz Josef School).
Members of the Franz Josef Community Council can be anyone that resides between the Ōkārito turnoff to the north and the Fox hills to the south.
A group of volunteers is elected annually in August to form a Management Executive. This team look after the day to day operations of the society within the rules of the constitution. If you are keen to work with us to make Franz a better place to live, work and play we would be glad to have you join us!
The Franz Josef Community Council has monthly meetings and everyone is encouraged to attend.
We usually meet the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in the Multipurpose Room at the Community Centre, unless otherwise advertised. The Secretary for the Community Council is the Community Development Officer (CDO).
Volunteering is one of the key ingredients in making a community a better place for us all to live, work & play.
It’s also a brill way to network & meet make new friends!

Community Groups Make Good Things Happen
By getting stuck in and working along side existing community groups you will accomplish so much.
Keep an ear out for these groups asking for a hand from time to time.

Rate payers throughout the district contribute collectively to the funding of a part time administrator position for the community. This funding is managed by the Management Executive of the Community Council. Since 2002 the position of Community Development Officer (CDO) has been actively adding value to the community. Lisa who fills this roll is experienced in helping to make new connections for community members. The real value of the position comes apparent when looking at the number of successful funding applications that have enabled the community to host some awesome events, run school holiday programs, network with the districts lead agencies and be a point of contact for most things community related. The roll currently is based from an office at the Community Centre, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays – 9am to 4pm.
Development West Coast (DWC) is the regional economic development agency for the West Coast region. DWC’s objectives are to promote employment opportunities and generate sustainable economic benefits for the West Coast. We aim to achieve this by investing in businesses and regional development projects that will benefit the West Coast now and in the future.

The Westland District reaches from Otira right the way down to south of Jacksons Bay.
The WDC officees are the base for Civil Defence in the district.
The WDC provides ratepayers with essential services, including infrastructure maintenance, waste management, water services, building and resource consents, and community facilities like libraries and museums.

When communication needs to occur quickly this is how the district council get in touch. In the past it has been used to Allet us to a boil water notice, or that we are about to run out of water, road and bridge closures and guidance during a CD event.
The West Coast Regional Council’s work guides and supports the sustainable development of our region. Their activities help look after our region’s water, soil, air and coasts so our current and future generations can all enjoy these precious resources.

Te Tai o Poutini Plan (TTPP) is the combined District Plan for the Buller, Grey and Westland District Councils. It will replace the current individual district plans. TTPP sets out the objectives, policies, rules and methods to manage land use activities and subdivision across the districts. TTPP also includes online maps to show zoning, and where various rules apply.
A zoning change withingthe proposed Te Tai o Poutini Plan will have an impact on the CBD area of the Franz Josef Township.
